corruption in India HAS declineD? SO SAYS THE CPI ...

How corrupt do you think India is? It is fairly safe to say that we all believe that India has a high degree of corruption. Pakistan- even more so. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka (also from the desi world) will probably not fair any better in our minds. USA, of course, is largely believed to be fairly clean. Mexico, again, not! If this is your perception of corruption in the above mentioned countries, you’re actually correct! Well, at least according to the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2014 that the Transparency International has come out with. And according to it, corruption in India has declined. Well, perceived to have declined. But before that ..

What Is Corruption Perception Index?

The Corruption Perceptions Index ranks countries and territories based on how corrupt their public sector is perceived to be. A country or territory’s score indicates the perceived level of public sector corruption on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).  This year's index includes 175 countries and territories.

The most corrupt nations are ...

And finally the five most corrupt nations are-  Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, North Korea and Somalia- all of them scoring 16 and under.

We say ....

The Corruption perception Index holds no surprise. Just as it did not last year. Many in India are celebrating the perceived reduction in corruption in India but its too early to celebrate. After all, as is clear from the report, India was ranked 72 in 2007, falling to 87 in 2010 and then 95 in 2011. Seems like a fluctuation of +- 10 is attributed more to relativity with other countries than any concrete happenings in India. Whatever the case, obviously a lot needs to be done to see any substantial change.

In fact, as per the report, José Ugaz, Chair person of Transparency International, has this to say- "Countries at the bottom need to adopt radical anti-corruption measures in favour of their people. Countries at the top of the index should make sure they don’t export corrupt practices to underdeveloped countries.”

We agree. However, let's hope all the corrupt countries are still salvageable. If Modi could revive the hope for India, lets' hope all is not lost. Perhaps new and charismatic leaders will rise in all the countries leading to a 'cleaner' world. No harm hoping, now is there?
