The Lewisville Independent School District (LISD) is rolling its 1:X program with the goal of arming each kid, right from kindergarteners to seniors with ipads.

Now, as LISD rolls out its program, I've had numerous discussions, rather debate, (some really heated and passionate) about whether or not, this is the way to go. And since I'm all for it, here are my five reasons for why I think this will work. Do you agree? Read on..

Thanksgiving – a wonderful American holiday for giving thanks!

Granted this is not a' desi tyohaar'. But for those of us living in America, we know only too well how much a part of fall/winter festivities Thanksgiving is for our kids and by ...

that token for us. So desi festival or not, celebrate we do!

For those of us living in India, we have certainly heard about it from the NRI cousins/ friends and have perhaps even celebrated with those who have returned from the US for good.

Movie Review: Gori Tere Pyaar Mein

Release Date: 22 November 2013

This Punit Malhotra (the young 82 born Manish Malhotra's nephew of 'I Hate Luv Storys' fame) directed and Karan Johar, Dharma Productions movie falls in the "Cute-Romantic-Good Looking (both people and sets)- Culturally Educational (well, almost)- Ethnically pleasing- Family Watch" category.

The Imran Khan, Kareena Kapoor (seen together after 'Ek Main Aur Ek Tu'), Shraddha Kapoor (of 'Aashique 2' fame) and Anupam Kher starer keeps you interested right to the end, with good laughs too- in the first half- with beautiful cultural and ethnic dispays for the "all imbibing" NRIs eyes; in the second half- with just the right kind of village scenes in Gujarat- not "set-like", conveying the despair and yet not "poverty-focused" either.

The movie is a romantic comedy that revolves around a shallow self centered city boy, Sriram Venkat (Imran Khan) from a Tamil family and the be-the-change-you-want-to-see kind of political activist, Dia Sharma (Kareena Kapoor) from a Punjabi family.  They meet, clash and part ways. Except he follows her to where she moves, a village in Gujarat.

Google's Glory....

The world's most used search engine is certainly doing it's part in keeping itself close to people's heart and not just their finger tips. Be it Google doodles, it's tributes or Google ads, the corporation is producing exactly what touches the masses- and this American internet search giant's reach is as far as India too- and not just Google India. People of Indian origins across the globe have been touched by the Gandhi doodle on Gandhi Jayanti and more recently, by the Shakuntla Devi's doodle on her birth anniversary. There have been numerous other doodles dedicated to people or events marking special occasions.

And then there are the tributes. When Sachin Tendulkar, God's most cherished gift to cricket, played his last test match last

week, Google's tribute to the master batsman was tweeted across seven continents and graced the facebook pages of millions.

Lately Google ads too have done more than just advertise itself. Yes, the search engine has in fact, taken on subjects that are close to people's heart. This is apparent from it's recently released 'Reunion' ad that portrays the reality of separation from loved ones caused by the India-Pakistan partition in 1947. The reunion between the long lost friends certainly touches the heart and makes you think back to the time when family and friends were torn apart- many- never to reunite.

November Is Here!

Happy Dhanteras and Happy Diwali!

(Photo Credits: Sanjay Bhat from Texas, USA)

October, as always, ended with a bang here in America with Halloween celebrations all across- on TV shows, soaps, sitcoms and in people's homes. We talked about NBC Today's ode to 'Bay Watch' (again, got to mention Matt Lauer in a one piece was a sight not to be missed), daytime TV saw Ellen DeGeneres as Nicki Minaj in a peep show top- again with fake 'assets' and then later in the day it was Access Hollywood's hosts, Billy Bush and Shaun Robinson, portraying Kris and Bruce Jenner that deserved the biggest applause! Even the soaps and sitcoms were all Halloween themed as always- with newer tricks and latest costumes. In our homes, of course, the kids and big kids (some of us;)) looked adorable/ scary/ innovative in the costumes as they formed their groups of friends, had pizza and headed out 'trick or treat'-ing together! Of course, now we have a huge bag of candies to worry about and will be busy 'tricking' the kids into not consuming them all!

So another Halloween is over and we move on to November, continuing the festivities with Indian festivals the first few days and ending the month with American holiday, Thanksgiving, Black Friday shopping and even Cyber Monday shopping! Yes, we have a lot to celebrate this month. Those of us in India have already been in Diwali 'mode' for the past one month probably (Halloween not 'getting in the way' of the Diwali festivities), the pre-Diwali action including cleaning up the house, decorating the outside with lights, making 'gujiyas' and other Diwali snacks; distributing sweets and gifts to friends and family, not to mention lighting the fire crackers on the evenings that is only the build up for the grand finale on the actual Diwali day. Those of us here in America, do of course do the best we can- at the very least making Diwali sweets and snacks (Pictures above shows the Diwali preparations in Bhat household in Texas, USA)

A Legend Is No More- Manna Dey

Manna Dey passes away at 94 in a Banglore hospital where he was admitted for renal and respiratory problems.

Manna Dey (1919-2013) was a legend and needs no introduction. His versatility and creativity was amply reflected in the numerous Indian movie songs that he sang in his six decade long carreer. Here we compile five interesting facts about him-

#1. Manna Dey's real name was Prabodh Chandra Dey.

#2. He won several awards for his contribution to music, including state honours like the Padma Shri in 1971, the Padma Vibhushan in 2005 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007.

#3. Along with Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh, and Kishore Kumar, he made up what was known as the "famous quartet of singers" who dominated the Hindi film music industry from 1950s to 1970s.

#4. He sang more than 3500 songs in his lifetime.

#5. He did his musical apprenticeship under his uncle and the renowned 'blind singer' Krishna Chandra Dey and chose music as a career due to the influence of his uncle and Sachin Dev Burman, under whom he worked as an assistant.

Our top 10 favorites that show the wide range of his style include-

Aye Meri Zohra Jabeen from Waqt;

Aye Mere Pyare Watan from Kabuli Wala;

India celebrated it's 67th Independence Day yesterday...

Indians and people of Indian origin here in the US and elsewhere, took to social media to wish each other a Happy Independence Day on the occasion of the 66th anniversary of India's independence from the British rule on Aug 15th, 1947. While most people updated their status with the congratulatory wishes, there were some who posted pictures of the celebrations in their place of work or other institutions. Sujata Sharma, an Additional Professor in AIIMS and a blogger, shared the pictures of celebrations at AIIMS where we see the place decorated with balloons in the colors of the Indian flag.

On the other hand, famous Indian dailies covered the celebrations at the Red Fort in New Delhi, where the Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh gave a speech, various school children gave performances and parades were held by the Delhi policemen and others . Of course, the Prime Minister's speech included the customary warning to Pakistan 'against using the Indian soil for anti-India activity' . The Times Of India also posted the August 15, 1947 edition of their daily with the headlines screaming- a "Nation wakes to new life" in bold print. It described the mood of the country as India exploded with joy. Hindustan Times chose to talk about things India can be proud of, including- inventing the number system, invention of zero by Aryabhatta, giving birth to a navigation system, giving Algebra, Calculus and Trigonometry to the world and inventing Chess. Needless to mention that Indian radio stations all over the world played patriotic songs like 'Mere Desh Ki Darti..', 'Ae Mere Vatan Ke Logo', etc all day.

Well, those of us born in the post struggle era in an independent nation, can only imagine the sacrifices made and the cost of the reward, but we sure hope that we live up to the hope and aspirations of those who fought to get us where we are.

Happy Father's Day

The United States of America is one of the few countries in the world that has a day designated to honor the fathers. Of course, many countries across the world followed America in celebrating the day.

So how and when did the Father’s Day celebrations start?

Some say that in 1908, the first event to honor fathers was held in West Virginia in the form of a Sunday sermon in memory of 362 men who had died in a mine explosion.  There are few other stories of events being held to honor fathers, but the idea of having a holiday or at least an official day for the occasion came from Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Her father was a veteran of the Civil War. His wife had died young, and he had raised six children without their mother. She wanted an official day to honor her father and other fathers. She was pushing for having a church service dedicated to fathers on June 5, her father's birthday. That year, on July 19th, 1910 Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day.

Then in 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. Finally in 1924 President Calvin Coolidge made it a national event to "establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations." Since then, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June.

IRS Calling US Citizens and Green Card Holders Living Outside US: June 17th is the deadline for tax returns

For those of you who are US citizens or Green card holders, living in India or anywhere outside of the US, TOI recently covered the tax returns reminder in an article detailing the US citizens of their liability, due dates and extensions. According to the article, if you are a US citizens or a Green card holders who were working outside the US for all or some part of 2012-

1.       17th June is the deadline to file for tax returns for you.

2.       You must attach a statement explaining that on the regular due date of the return, that is April 15, 2013, you were living outside the United States and that your main place of business or post of duty was outside the United States .

3.       You may apply for additional extension to Oct 15 by filling Form 4868 before the above deadline date.

4.       Your foreign income is exempt if a treaty or statutory exclusion or foreign tax credit applies that reduces your US tax liability to zero.

5.       You must include certain offshore asset compliance forms pertaining to foreign accounts along with the country in which each account exists.

6.       If the aggregate value of your foreign financial assets on Dec 31, 2012 exceeds prescribed limits (for instance, $ 100,000 for married filing jointly), you must also file Form 8938- Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets.

7.       If the aggregate value of your offshore financial accounts exceeds $10,000 during the year, you must also file Form TD F 90-22.1- FBAR or Foreign Bank and Financial Account Report.

Good luck!

Congratulations Amitabh and Jaya on your 40th Wedding Anniversary, albeit belated but certainly heart-felt!

So an ardent fan of Amitabh Bachchan asked me why we did not cover Amitabh and Jaya’s 40th Wedding Anniversary on desideewar. I said we did think about it but then decided against it because we haven’t been covering celebrity birthdays and anniversaries. “But this is Amitabh’s 40th Anniversary and in the world of film industry, that’s a big milestone”, she insisted. She went on to tell me something that really stayed with me because Amitabh has been on my mind lately.  She said she tells her son (her son who is now ready to leave the nest and venture out into the world for the college years experience) that if you’re ever in a situation when you feel like the fight is getting hard, think of Amitabh Bachchan because Amitabh Bachchan has faced everything- the fame & the fall, a near-fatal accident and even bankruptcy. Through it all, he has still managed to come out on the very top.

In the 70+ years of life, the 1942 born megastar of Indian Cinema, Amitabh Bachchan has certainly gone through lot of ups and downs in life. And yes, through it all, he has come out on the very top- even making the coveted Hollywood debut in ‘The Great Gatsby’ this year. And I say Amitabh has been on my mind lately not because I’m a fan of his, but because I have become a fan of his. All over again.

Growing up, my siblings and I loved watching Amitabh movies.  ‘Don’(1978) was the first movie of Amitabh that we watched in the theater. There was no stopping us after that. We watched all of his others after that- ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ (1978), ‘Mr Natwarlal’ (1979), ‘Dostana’ (1980),  ‘Ram Balaram’ (1980), ‘Laawaris’ (1981), ‘Kaalia’(1981), ‘Namak Halal’ (1981), ‘Nasseb’ (1981) and so on and so forth, even the ones we totally did not understand like ‘Jurmana’. I lost him somewhere around ‘Sharabi’ and ‘Shahenshah’ (1988). Years later while here in US, it wasn’t his movies that re-kindled my interest in him, but it’s his blogs and his facebook posts and the way he carries himself in shows like ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ (2001) and the way he speaks of his father’s poetry, the way he recites them, the way he composed his own on ‘Nirbhaya’- essentially everything about him- now at 70. He is a truly an intellectual being, a writer, an artist, so humble and modest that I’m truly impressed.

Jaya, on the other hand, was the heroine most of us knew of from the Sunday movie days. We saw the early movies of Amitabh and her together on TV on Sunday evenings. Movies like- Zanjeer  and Abhimaan of 1973, Sholay and Mili of 1975, then much later Sil Sila in 1981 and not too recently Kabhi

Khushi Kabhie Gham  in 2000. We know how she stood by Amitabh during rumors of his alleged affairs with Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi and then Rekha. We know they have together made a happy family with their daughter Shweta and son, Abhishek.

Amitabh and Jaya met on the sets Guddi. He was supposed to play the role that was eventually done by Samit Bhanja. He was dropped because ‘Anand’ released and Hrishikesh Mukherjee was looking for a new face for the role.  However, they went on to do other films together. According to TOI, to celebrate the success of ‘Zanjeer’ in May 1973, Amitabh and Jaya wanted to holiday abroad, Big B's parents insisted that they get married before the trip, and so, they got married on June 3 1973.

Amitabh and Jaya’s marriage has certainly withstood the test of time and love! Gwyneth Paltrow said in a recent interview while talking about her 10 year marriage with Chris Martin, “That’s like 70 years in Hollywood terms”. Well then, we have to appreciate Amitabh and Jaya’s 40 years- 280 years in Hollywood terms and maybe 80 years in Bollywood terms?

So Mr. and Mrs. Bachchan, please accept our congratulations on your 40th Wedding Anniversary, albeit belated but certainly heart-felt.

Reflecting on Jiah Khan's Suicide
Don't Take Life, Take Help

International magazines like US Magazine and England’s Guardian and others covered the story of the young, beautiful and confident, Jiah Khan who died on Monday, June 3rd. She was found hanging from the ceiling in her apartment in Juhu by her mother around 11:00 pm. TOI reported that Suraj Pancholi, son of Bollywood actors, Aditya  Pancholi and Zareena Waihab, were in a relationship.  Jiah, 25, and Suraj, 22, were family friends but came close through social networking. Their relationship was said to be volatile. Suraj was brought in by the police for questioning since he was the last person she had called before taking her life.

A sad end of a precious life.

Speculations are rife as to what drove the young starlet into committing suicide, some say it was the fact that her film career was going nowhere, while others say it was relationship issues. Whether career concerns or relationship woes, the cause of suicide was depression. The saddest part of the story is what the loved ones- parents and siblings have to go through when losing a beloved to suicide. Because, of all the causes of death, suicide is one of the most potentially preventable.  And yet, it is one of the top ten prevalent causes of death. According to WebMD (provider of  credible health information & tools for managing your health) , in 2009, the last year for which statistics are available, suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S and over 90% of people who die by suicide have clinical depression or other diagnosable mental disorder.

Jiah Khan’s death is extremely sad, even more so because it could have been easily prevented. It is important to not only communicate and discuss your feelings with friends and family when gripped by sadness, but also equally important is to stay alert to what your near and dear ones are going through.

WebMD lists out these warning signs that someone may be thinking about or planning to commit suicide include:

·         Always talking or thinking about death

·         Clinical depression -- deep sadness, loss of interest, trouble sleeping and eating -- that gets worse

·         Having a "death wish," tempting fate by taking risks that could lead to death, such as driving fast or running red lights

·         Losing interest in things one used to care about

·         Making comments about being hopeless, helpless, or worthless

·         Putting affairs in order, tying up loose ends, changing a will

·         Saying things like "it would be better if I wasn't here" or "I want out"

·         Sudden, unexpected switch from being very sad to being very calm or appearing to be happy

·         Talking about suicide or killing one's self

·         Visiting or calling people to say goodbye

While we can’t really tell what was going on Jiah Khan’s head when she decided to take her own life, we can certainly tell that staying alert and communication is the key to saving a life of a friend, colleague or family member who might be having a hard time dealing with what life has meted out to them. On the other hand, if you are the one suffering, it is just as important to recognize the signs of depression and seek help from a doctor and be sure to rely on friends and family.

Life is precious, way too precious to waste it away on someone who doesn’t value it or over something that holds no value over the pain felt by the loved ones left behind.

Jiah Khan commits suicide

TOI and other leading Indian dailies report that the 1988 born, 25-year old American-born British-Indian actress, Jiah Khan, known to many as the Nishabd girl, is said to have committed suicide. She was found dead in her Juhu apartment and is reported to have died by hanging herself as she had been depressed for some time due to personal issues.

Jiah Khan debuted in Hindi movies in 2007 opposite Amitabh Bachchan, for which he got lot of flak as he was seen crushing on a 18 year old- Jiah Khan. She also starred in Amir Khan’s Ghajini in 2008.

Jiah Khan was born Nafisa Khan, to an Indian American father, Ali Rizvi Khan, and a Hindi film actress mother, Rabiya Amin, mostly known for her role in Dulha Bikta Hai of 1982.

Hindi cinema will miss this talented starlet. Truly sad to hear of this tragedy. Incidently, the tragegy also reminds you another tragedy in 1993 when Divya Bharti, another young and talented Hindi film actress, also February born, mysteriously plunged to her death from her 5th storey apartment in Mumbai at the young age of 19.

Gadget review:

Rover 2.0 by Rohun Kulshrestha, 10 year-old-

The rover 2.0 is good and bad in a few ways. Some ways  it is good and cool because you can move it around from your iPad or iPhone and see where it is, and you can say something and the person on the other side can hear you and you can hear them. Another feature is you can take videos or photos and it saves them to your album, and if you want the rover to go in a dark place all you have to do is click the button stealth mode and then it sees in the dark.
A mode that is in the rover 2.0 version only and not in the rover classic or original, is that you can move the camera up or down to see taller things or shorter things.

Now here comes the bad news, it lags a lot,and I mean like almost most of the time you use it. Another bad part about it is that it freezes on you're iPad/iPhone but not in real life so you won't know where it is or where it's going. This issue really bugs me but not other people. I have a very hard time controlling it because you don't have just 2 buttons its 2 sliders and you can't basically turn it but soon You may be able to because you would have had better experience on it.

That's all the good and bad things about it and overall it works pretty good so I suggest you save up money by doing chores around the house and go buy it.
I did.

So which desi celebrity's attire in Cannes got noticed by the Americana Press?

Vidya Balan is being criticized for overdoing the ‘Indian theme’ when she walked the red carpet with a 'pallu' in her Sabyasachi designs at the opening ceremony of the ongoing 66th Cannes Festival in Cannes, France. Although her golden sari (again Sabyasachi) on day 3 was finally approved by the Cannes fashion police.

Sonam Kapoor was raved for carrying the sari jacket combination well, even though Aishwarya Rai got lot of flak for wearing the style last year. But even she did not really catch the eye of American media. Of course, the fact that she’s not really known here is a reason as well.

Aishwarya Rai did well in her Elie Saab gown and the Sabyasachi. Even her Armani Prive won accolades on Day 6 of the festival at the premiere of Cleopatra.

But who really got noticed by the American media?

It was none other than Freida Pinto (of the Slumdog Millionaire fame). Frieda is representing a leading beauty brand at the festival. On day one of the festival, the 29 year old actress walked the red carpet in a pink Gucci gown. On day 2, it was a Sanchita Ajjampur gown for her.

Yes, Freida Pinto was the only one that got media coverage by the american tv here. Not just that, she actually made it to Access Hollywood's top 5 picks for the best dressed women in the event. They loved all her gowns and not one of them was Indian.

So we ask you, do you think Bollywood's leading ladies should-

1. dress up in flowy gowns for international events like cannes since India is as global as can be?

2. dress up in our famous designers' ensembles like Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Manish Malhotra and the likes? After all that promotes desi attire and desi designer and who cares whether they make to top 5 or even 10 for that matter?

3. mix it up like Aishwarya did- Indian for Indian movies premieres and not for non.

Phew! It’s All Good, People. Talk is- Aishwarya Rai’s Gown is wow at Cannes!

Last year Aishwarya Rai’s chin (ahem ahem... her second chin) got more attention at Cannes than her ensembles. This year Vidya Balan is being criticized for overdoing the ‘Indian theme.’ Others from Bollywood haven’t exactly been raved about either.

So Aishwarya Rai must be heaving a sign of relief after her gorgeous gown was much appreciated by one and all when she made an appearance in an Ellie Saab on Sunday night at the premiere of ‘Inside Lewis Davis’ at the 66th Cannes Festival going on at Cannes, France. Her savvy Sabyasachi lehenga-sari, at the premiere of ‘Bombay Talkies’, was equally appreciated. Various different leading newspapers carried news of her appearance at Cannes this morning. Indian Express said, ‘Aishwarya Rai is a stunner in Sabyasachi, Elie Saab’, while the Times of India read ‘ Aishwarya stuns in flowy Elie Saab gown, saree at Cannes’. Other dailes from across the world also covered Aishwarya’s Cannes appearance, The Daily Mail from UK calling her look ‘Cannes-tastic’. Several of the news items also covered her decade long past Cannes couture, specifically mentioning the flak she got on not having shed the pregnancy weight in the 2012 Cannes Festival.

We loved the Daily Mail’s coverage on the topic. Check it out at-

P.S No, her now 18 month old daughter, Aaradhya did not accompany her on the red camera.

Cannes And Bollywood

The global film fraternity is currently celebrating the business of movie making at the 66th Cannes Film Festival going on in Cannes, France from May 15th to May 26th 2013. The movies of interest to us are ‘The Great Gatsby’ (with Amitabh Bachchan in a cameo role, his first in Hollywood) and of course the three Hindi movies- ‘Bombay Talkies’ (directed by Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, and Dibakar Banerjee), ‘Monsoon Shootout’ (directed by Amit Kumar) and ‘Ugly’ (directed by Anurag Kashyap). The festival will also place spotlight on Satyajit Ray’s ‘Charulata’ (English title, ‘The Lonely Wife’) along with some of the other old Cannes Classic.

The Cannes festival this year kicked off with the highly anticipated movie, ‘The Great Gatsby’, one of the top three desi interest being Amitabh Bachchan, the megastar’s debut Hollywood venture alongside Hollywood stars of the likes of Leonardo Dicaprio and Tobey Maguire.

Now in recent years the Cannes festival has become an important global platform to showcase our Bollywood movies and actors. This year is even more special because the festival is paying a special tribute to the 100 years of Indian Cinema. Hence the specially emphasized Indian theme.  We saw that in Vidya Balan’s extremely traditional, albeit gorgeous Sabyasachis. We noticed the ‘naths’ (nose rings) donned by Sonam Kapoor (in Anamika Khanna designs) & Vidya Balan (incidently, she’s also on the jury panel to be headed by Steven Spielberg). So did the media at Cannes and it ended up being the talk of the town. We saw pictures of Amitabh in not so impressive ensembles at Cannes, however. Some were not so impressed with Sonam's and Vidya's either, but honestly, we were (well atleast Vidya's day 2 and later outfits). See the desi style at-

Next awaited event is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s arrival along with her little princess, Aaradhya. Now, Aishwarya Rai, since being crowned the World’s Most Beautiful Woman by People magazine in 2009 (? Was it? Tell us.), is practically considered a regular at the Cannes red carpet by now. The attires that have adorned her have been largely accepted by the global fashion police as well. Take a look at her outfits over the years at Cannes at-

Everyone is waiting to see what will Aishwarya Rai choose to grace the event in? Check back here to see who reports it the best- we'll bring you the link with our comments on it.

Mother’s Day

We wish our readers a very Happy Mother’s Day!

Every woman who’s a Mother, or has ever “Mother-ed” any child- be it her sister’s kid or a friend’s, certainly deserves this very special day designated to her.

To all of our Mothers who don’t have us near them on this special day, know that you’re thought of every single day in a very special way!

So how did Mother’s Day start? We wondered and so researched.

According to biography.com, Anna Jarvis, from Philadelphia, is the Mother of Mother’s Day. Anna Marie Jarvis lobbied for years to have a designated day to honor Mothers in memory of her own mother whose desire it was to have a memorial day for mothers. Anna finally succeeded in her efforts when in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson established Mother's Day. The second Sunday in May was designated as the Mother's Day.

The way Mother’s day is celebrated today is way more commercialized than what Anna had in mind. Today, Mother’s Day is a $ 20 billion holiday, according to The National Retail Federation. But the essence of the day is maintained. Honor Thy Mother.

Amitabh at 'The Great Gatsby' Premiere in NY

So Amitabh Bachchan recently returned from New York. He was there to attend the premiere of ‘The Great Gatsby’ on the 1st of May at the Lincoln Center in NY. Jaya Bachchan accompanied him on the trip. It may be recalled that Amitabh has a cameo role in the movie in which Leonardo DiCaprio plays the lead and the movie cast also boasts of other famous Hollywood actors like Toby Maguire (our friendly neighborhood Spider Man) and Carey Mulligan.

Set to release on May 10th 2013, the movie shows Amitabh Bachchan in the role of Meyer Wolfsheim, a flamboyant and suave Jewish money lender.

Amitabh, ever so active on the social media, kept his fans updated before and after the Premiere. Got to say we were impressed by his humility when he invited the NY locals and those living close by to “Come and support one small cameo in the film by yours truly ... come for the red carpet ... moral support !!!” And turn up they did- in large numbers, from far and wide, with banners of their superstar from past to present. His supporters “shouted their lungs out, the US media shocked and surprised”, posted Amitabh on May 2, talking about the evening of the Premiere. He posted several pictures from the event and also the AVS video coverage of the red carpet interviews.

See the AVS video of the premiere of 'Gatsby'-

Amitabh landed in NY on Apr 29th, and wondered why New York is called the ‘Big Apple’. Soon afterwards, his status read, “Found out why it is called the Big Apple .. Around the 1920's when horse racing was introduced, the winner was given an Apple as a reward for victory .. it stuck thereon .. so the place where the Apple was given became the Big Apple ..”

After a very successful trip, needless to say, Amitabh left NY on May 7th, posting, “The journey to New York ends and further travels take over preference .. It has been an awakening despite the years ... it has been a revelation in more respects than one ... it has been the strengthening of the bonds of the extended family ..
But above all this has been the affection of the Ef .. this love and affection cannot change or die .. it is eternal ... !!!”

'The Great Gatsby' releases this Fri, 10th May in theaters everywhere. It shows Amitabh Bachchan in the role of Meyer Wolfsheim, a flamboyant and suave Jewish money lender. Incidently Amitabh also posted the review of the movie from Variety magazine-

"By far the liveliest work in the film comes from two actors with only a few minutes of screen time between them: the lithe, long-limbed newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as gabby golf pro Jordan Baker, and, in a single scene that marks his belated Hollywood debut, Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan as the flamboyant Jewish “gambler,” Meyer Wolfsheim. "

And modest that Amitabh is, he added,” In shocked disbelief .. no no this cannot be true .. !!!

Well, Mr Bachchan, you’re very humble and modest, but we know that you would have made your 2 second screen presence in your debut venture into Hollywood worth its while.  You have certainly managed to generate enormous interest in the US media with respect to the Bollywood connection. Good luck for all of your future endeavors, Mr Bachchan.

Be sure to check out 'The Great Gatsby' this weekend. We hear that the music of the film is at No. 1 on the charts.

Shamshad Begum passes away…

If you grew up in India, you must have heard some very melodious songs from the 1960s and even 1950s being played on the radio. No doubt amongst those were songs like ‘Leke pehla pehla pyar’ and ‘Kahin pe nigahen kahin pe nishana ‘ (from CID- 1956), ‘Milte hi aankhen dil hua’  and ‘Chod Babul Ka Ghar ‘(from Babul), ‘Kabhi aar kabhi paar lagathi re nazar’ (from Aar Paar), ‘Saiyan Dil mein aana re’ (from Bahar), ‘Reshmi salwar kurta jaali da ‘(from Naya Daur’) and the all-time favorite ‘Mere piya gaye Rangoon’ (from Patanga) sung in a very unique voice. That unique voice belonged to Shamshad begum. That voice is now lost forever. Shamshad begum passed yesterday, Apr 23rd. She was 94. She was one of the first playback singers of Indian cinema.

According to accounts of her life, Shamshad Begum's singing ambitions met opposition from her family. When she finally won a contract with a recording company, her father agreed to let her sing on the condition that she would record in a burka and not allow herself to be photographed. Many of her fans only saw what she looked like in the 1970s, the Associated Press reports.

Incidently, in Mar 2013, she was honoured with Padma Bhushan, a civilian award given by the Government of India. Also, O.P. Nayyar Foundation had recently announced that they were going to honor her with the prestigious O.P. Nayyar award for her contribution to Hindi film music.

Shamshad Begum is no more, but her legacy will live on. Her upbeat songs have already inspired various remixes that are part of every famous DJ’s play list. She has certainly left a mark!

Shakuntala Devi, who has come to be known as a ‘Human Computer’ due to her mental mathematical abilities that has always astounded people all over the world passed away this morning in a Banglore hospital. She was 80.

Born on 4 November in 1939 at the city of Bangalore in Karnataka state, Shakuntala Devi was an outstanding calculating prodigy of India.Give her a date and she would tell you the day. People who ever had a chance to meet her in person would say with amazement to those listening in disbelief.

According to the biography on Shakuntla Devi at StudyMode, she came from a humble family. Her father was a trapeze and tightrope performer and later on acted as a human cannonball in a circus. It is said that her innate aptitude with numbers was discovered quite by chance when she was merely three years of age, when while playing cards with her father she beat him by memorizing the cards.

Adnan Sami in USA

The 1969 born singer, musician, composer and even actor, Adnan Sami is currently touring USA giving concerts in various major cities across the country like Seattle (WA), Houston (TX), Cupertino (CA), Chicago (IL), Hoffman Estates (IL), Essex Fells (NJ), Dallas (TX) and Washington DC between Mar 15th and Arp 12th.

Adnan Sami was born in London, to a Pakistani Pathan father and an Indian mother. “But I am sure about one thing, and that is my soul lies here in India," TOI quoted him as saying in an article on him in 2009 during his India visit. According to the same article, as a kid, he visited India during his school breaks during which time he learned music from Pandit Shivkumar Sharma.  His talent was discovered by Asha Bhosle when he was 10 years old, at a R. D. Burman concert. She advised him to take up music as a career and of course, as we all know, he did.

Source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/Adnan-Sami-Fastest-fingers-first/articleshow/37852222.cms?

Most of us from India know Adnan Sami for his “Lift Kara De” song, a song in which he requests God to give him practically everything- bangla, motor car (ek nahi do char), aeroplane, world-tour, dollar/ pound,  cash/ check,  sona/chandee, heere/moti, etc on the grounds “tune khud hee toh kaha hai, deta hu jo mangta hai”. Yes, the lyrics amused many, the music was beautiful and his voice soulful. When he sang that song, little did he know that God will get him every single of those things, including dollar, pounds, world-tour. The song was part of the album, ‘Kabhi to Nazar Milao’ that he composed in 2000 and had teamed up with Asha Bhosle for the melodious romantic numbers in it. The album was an instant blockbuster hit and had ruled the music charts for two years. His album, “Tera Chehra” of 2002, featuring Rani Mukerji was a big hit as well. He has also sung a duet with Amitabh Bachchan (‘Kabhi Nahi’). And the list goes on.

Adnan Sami is equally known for losing over 300 lbs weight in 2006-07. We had all seen his 500+ lbs frame and were pleasantly surprised at his new and improved looks. His new look is certainly the talk of the town in each leg of his 2013 US- Canada tour.

So again, talking of Adnan Sami’s current tour here in the USA. His Houston show organized by Rehan Siddiqi of Hum Tum shows was a mega success with the audience swooning over his top hit scores, right from ‘Kabhi to nazar milao’, ‘Bheegi, bheegi raaton mein’, ‘Tera chehra’, to yes,  ‘Lift kara de’. The man who is known to have the fastest fingers on the piano mesmerized the audience with his music.

Adnan Sami’s concert in the Bay area pretty much got the same response on Mar 24th. He sang our favorite songs, played the piano with ease and finesse and engaged the audience with light-hearted jokes and comments, we hear. And once again, the climax was with ‘Lift Kara De’.

March 29th was Seattle, March 30th, Chicago and Mar 31st Boston. The ones yet to happen are Houston (2nd show)- Apr 4th, Dallas- Apr 5th, New Jersey- Apr 6th and Washington DC- Apr 12th.

So if you live or can drive to where Adnan Sami has not yet worked his magic, be there, belt up and prepare for an enticing ride. And after that, come back and tell us about you experience.

So Sanjay Dutt's Sentence- Justified or Not? Your verdict.

On March 19th, the Supreme Court sentenced Sanjay Dutt to five years in jail for getting guns from gangsters involved in the 1993 bombings in Mumbai. Since he served 16 months between 1994 and 1995 and then a few weeks again in 2007, he will now have to serve over 3 years in Jail.

We asked you if you think that the punishment is justified and on what counts-
1. Sanjay Dutt was aware/ involved in the Bombay Blasts of 1993?
2. Sanjay Dutt mingled with the Dons knowing that they're involved in Anti-India activities?
3. Sanjay Dutt had illegal AK-56 and a pistol in his possession.
4. He was found guilty of having illegal arms, so he therefore has to be involved in some illegal activities?

We talked to a lot of people and some of you commented on our facebook page.

Here's the verdict-

All of you agreed that #1 is not true. You do not believe that Sanjay Dutt was aware or involved in the Bombay blasts of 1993. All of you agreed with #2 and #3 as well. You do believe that he mingled with the Dons knowing of their involvement in Anti-India activities & other illegal activities. And you do believe that Sanjay Dutt had illegal weapons in his possessions that were given to him by those responsible in the Mumbai blasts. We will also add that all of you were appalled at the Indian Judiciary system for taking 20 long years to reach the verdict.

Now, getting to what everyone does not agree with. Sameer Phatak of Texas commented on our facebook page, that the sentencing is totally justified on counts of #2, #3 and #4 above. Not surprisingly almost everyone who hails from Maharashtra felt the same way, plus others who don’t. They describe details of the blasts that they have heard from their neighbors or relatives who witnesses the gory scenes first hand. They feel no sympathy for Sanjay Dutt. They feel that Sanjay Dutt was going through a phase in his life in the 1990s where he was not only mingling with the Dons, but was involved in illegal activities and not just owning an illegal AK-56 and a pistol. Some went as far as to say that the weapons found in his possessions were the ones used during the blasts. They were even angered at the Hindi Film fraternity for their tweets of support and the politicians who’re supporting the actor too.

However, there are others who feel a little differently. They agree with #2 and #3, but are not sure of #4. They feel it was sheer stupidity on Sanjay Dutt’s part to involve with Anti-India elements. As Roli Mehrotra commented on our facebook page, “Like all celebrities , Sanjay Dutt is stupid . But knowing it is illegal and yet owning weapons , knowing the person is involved in terrorist activities and yet ignoring it and still maintaining the acquaintance makes it guilty. Although Roli doesn’t believe that he should be let go, she and lot of others feel it was sheer stupidity on his part.

And then again some of you said that #2 and #3 are true, but that doesn’t justify the punishment. You have sympathy for Sanjay Dutt. You feet that after 20 years, there’s no reason to pull the rug from under his feet when he is now settled with a wife (Manyata, who he married in 2008) and has twins, a boy and a girl (born 2010) and an older daughter, Trishala (1986 born), from his first wife, Richa Sharma. Like Deepika Khanna put it on our facebook page, “I am feeling really bad about all this news about him. He should be given another chance. I support him .God bless him.”

We have to say though, that the popular verdict is guilty as charged.

“ Munna Bhai” Chale Jail…Justified or Not?

No that’s not the name of Sanjay Dutt’s new movie, but is the next phase of his rather trouble infused life. We’re referring to the news we all woke up to this morning. The much loved “Munna Bhai” has been sentenced to five years in jail for getting guns from gangsters involved in the 1993 bombings in Mumbai.

Now, whether it’s fair or not, his fans all over the world are certainly saddened by the news. And so are the Bollywood big shots who tweeted their support to him this morning as-

KARAN JOHAR: "I am truly shattered to hear of Sanju's sentence...the nicest guy i have known just doesnt deserve this...my heart goes out to him...."

ARSHAD WARSI, his fellow actor in the Munna Bhai series: "I am numb, I don't know what to say. Sanjay Dutt is not a criminal. This is too harsh a decision."

MAHESH BHATT: "Heart Broken: Just heard that Sanjay Dutt has to go to jail for 5 years. I expected mercy! Alas it did not happen."
BIPASHA BASU: "Saddenned n shocked with the news about Sanjay Dutt's Jail sentence.Strength to him n his family."

VISHAL DADLANI, music director "I stand with @duttsanjay, always will. He's my brother. He made mistakes, but he's served more than his time, in terms of mental stress."

Sanjay Dutt spent 18 years in prison in 2006 on charges of acquiring illegal weapons from the men convicted for the Mumbai attacks that killed 257 people in 1993. In 2007, he was cleared of conspiracy charges in the Mumbai serial blasts but was found guilty of illegal possession of an AK-56 rifle and a pistol and sentenced to six years imprisonment. He was later released on bail pending a further hearing. The Supreme Court has rejected his appeal, sentencing him to five years in jail and ordered him to return to custody in four weeks time.

Sanjay Dutt will now have to serve over three years in jail after serving in jail for 16 months between 1994 and 1995 and for a few weeks again in 2007.

Of the other 100 people found involved in the case, 12 people received death penalty and 20 others were given life sentences, according to Reuters.

Sanjay Dutt’s Movies in the Making:

“Policegiri” - K S Ravikumar's

“Peekay”- Raju Hirani's

"Unglee"- Rensil D'Silva's

"Zanjeer"- Apoorva Lakhia's

He was also supposed to start the third of the “Munnabhai” series sometime this year. Although, Sanjay Dutt has been around since he first started his acting career in 1981 with “Rocky”, he is most popularly known for his “Munnabhai” character in the two-movie series directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vinod Chopra Productions. The first one is “Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.” (2003) and second is “Lage Raho Munna Bhai” (2006). “Munna Bhai Chale Amerika” was going to be the next one in the series, but was later shelved. The third one is now going to be “Munnabhai Chale Delhi”, we hear.

Do you feel the sentence is justified? Do you think Sanjay Dutt was involved enough? Or mingling with the “Dons” is involvement enough? Do you support our “Munna Bhai”?

Did you hear?

Steven Spielberg in Mumbai....

So the Hollywood Mega Movie Maker, Steven Spielberg was in Mumbai and a Big Bash was thrown in his honor by Anil Ambani in which all the big shots of Bollywood were invited, giving them an opportunity of meeting Spielberg up close and personal. You may recall that Anil Ambani is the head of DreamWorks partner Reliance Entertainment.

Amongst the top notch personalities that partied with Spielberg were Amitabh Bachchan with Aishwarya Rai, Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri, Hrithik Roshan and Suzanne, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, Preity Zinta, etc. Also present were our very own directors like- Abhishek Kapoor , Anurag Kashyap, Ashutosh Gowarikar, R Balki, David Dhawan, Farah Khan, Gauri Shinde, Javed Akhtar, Karan Johar, Kunal Kohli, Madhur Bhandarkar, Mahesh Bhatt, Prabhudeva, Raju Hirani, Rakesh Roshan, Ramesh Sippy, Ram Gopal Varma, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Subhash Ghai, Vishal Bhardwaj and you get it- it was pretty much a you- name- it- and he- or- she- was- there kind of event.

We hear that Amitabh Bachchan was the host of the evening and true to himself, he kept his fans updated via his blog describing the event as, "An evening with an institution... an evening of sharing cinema with the prolific maker, inventor, story teller, innovator and one who continues to surprise us with his genius".

As you know Steven Spielberg is on an international tour. During the India leg of the tour, he also spoke to 'The Times Of India' about couple of projects that DreamWorks plans to undertake with their partners Reliance Entertainment. These include a movie that will take place on the India-Pakistan border in Kashmir and a movie on Martin Luther King Jr- his story, his movement and how his admiration for Mahatma Gandhi influenced him.

Well, Hollywood and Bollywood joining hands is certainly making an interesting amalgam. It sure is a match made in heaven.

Today is Woman's Day!

Amitabh Bachchan had some very profound message on his blog couple of days back for Woman's Day and nobody can say it better. The megastar of Indian Cinema had this to say-

"There is a cause that needs support. There is a call that needs attention. And there is a heart that needs to be heard.

Despite great awareness ideals that have taken space and demonstration among the society, the atrocities continue with abandon. Great introspection needs to be done to fathom the reason and the continuous disregard for all that should be looked upon as an evil. I will not agree with the reasoning that such incidents happen all over the world or whether the statistics favor another region or not. I am interested in why it is happening at all !

Hindu philosophy and several mythological tales have forever depicted divinity in the female form. Of being one that has power and strength in the various modes of society. Of being the symbol of learning and wisdom. A destroyer of evil in some and the giver of literate manifestation in the other.

But it has also been the giver of life. One that ensures the continuity of living, of procreation, and indeed in a sense, creation itself. The ones that abuse her are the ones created by her. They exist because they were born from her. Is this the kind of value that they give in return to them that made it possible for them to be born ??

STOP THIS DISRESPECT !! MEASURE THE PRESENCE OF THE WOMAN IN OUR EXISTENCE WITH REQUIRED DIGNITY !! PROTECT THEM THAT FALL UNFORTUNATE VICTIMS TO SAVAGE INHUMAN INTENT AND STAND TOUGH AGAINST THEM THAT RAISE THEIR HANDS TO DEFILE THEM !!!"

Not just with words( and his words are a tool in itself) Amitabh Bachchan also supports Bell Bajao. Breakthrough’s Bell Bajao! launched in India in 2008, is a cultural and media campaign that calls on men and boys to take a stand against domestic violence. The campaign seeks to reduce domestic violence and to highlight the role that men and boys can play in reducing violence, according to their web site. Amitabh invites all men to support the cause.

What can we do as woman? We can pledge to expect nothing but respect as a woman. Because every woman deserves it. As a mother, we can pledge to raise daughters who expect to be revered and sons who do.

Let's do our part!

Happy Woman's Day to all!

India's Daughter Honored By America

Nirbhaya. That was the name given to the young 23 year old girl who lost her life on Dec 29th 2012 in Delhi as a result of grotesque act committed by six barbarians. We covered her story, a story of her battle against the brutes who tortured her, her fight to survive and her courage in giving out the unfathomable details, thereby shaking up the entire nation into action.

Nirbhaya is amongst the 10 extraordinary women who have been selected to be honored on International Women's Day, March 8th, this Friday. She’ll be awarded with the Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Award by Secretary John Kerry. First Lady Michelle Obama will also be present at the ceremony in the Dean Acheson Auditorium of the U.S. Department of State. The ceremony will be streamed on www.state.gov on Saturday, Mar 9th at 1:30am IST. This award recognizes women around the globe who have shown exceptional courage and leadership in advocating for women’s rights and empowerment.

According to the State government’s website, “For millions of Indian women, her personal ordeal, perseverance to fight for justice, and her family’s continued bravery is helping to lift the stigma and vulnerability that drive violence against women.”

Lets' keep the movement alive. By doing our part.
