The Midday Grocery Store

September 17, 2017

GUEST AUTHOR: Raashi Kulshrestha

Literary Nonfiction

("It is a nice take on being a 'new comer' to 'adulthood' at the young age of 18", as one critic put it. The author, at 18, metaphorically uses a grocery store as the stage of adulthood where she has just stepped on to for the first one as a young adult herself)

Adulthood is funny. That guy is a regular old douche-bag that comes around on...

Conversation With My Son: My Murmuring Son ... :)

June 9, 2017
What is with teenagers and incoherent talking? I know it is a phase that will pass soon enough but not before I have had a conversation on it.

As I give my son a ride for his band practice, I ask him a question and I think he goes, " yeah I did it". I tell him that I can barely hear him and he's quiet. I tell him the story of the time his sister would make barely audible replies- thank God that phase is long passed. I remember feeling like the witch in the film Rapunzel repeatedly asking the ...

The Many Opportunities To Talk ....Even A Tina Fey Movie ...

March 14, 2016
We are in the movie theater with our two teenage kids, kicking off their spring break with a family- movie- night on the agenda. Except that the movie is rated R and our younger one is 13. Which movie? Tina Fey's latest release Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. I blame my daughter who had declared the movie to be PG-13 (yes, we should have checked instead of blindly trusting her- as she very wisely points out in her own defense too- probably what your thought is as well, and ours- if we are honest with ...

When All You Need To Tell Your Child Is To Follow The Heart ..

June 2, 2015

Dillon Srivastava, a 13-year old 8th grader, thought about who he believes he is when his class was asked to write on "Who Am I"? What do you write when you're an American with a second generation Indian American father and a white mother who is herself a daughter of a Canadian mother and an Irish father? What do you write when you have 8 Indian American first cousins (not to mention more than a dozen 2nd cousins) and you thoroughly enjoy celebrating numerous Indian traditional festivals and ...

Conversation With My Nephews - They Inspire Me ...

March 15, 2015
My two nephews, 13- and 11- year old, Dave and Bobby, visited us some time back during their fall break. While I am at the airport to see them off, we end up having a good couple of hours to spend together. They were traveling as unaccompanied minors so I was allowed to be with them until they boarded their flight. It so happens that the flight gets delayed. I truly cherish those two hours we spend together. Without their cousins (my kids) to distract them, we actually get an opportunity to h...

Conversation With My Kids - On Friendship

November 23, 2014
As parents of our kids, we want to impart illimitable wisdom to our children. As children of our parents, we know that we might not get a very receptive audience, but somewhere something will stay. And so the interminable conversations continue- even in the face of disinterested looks. Or do we detect some fleeting interest?

As we stroll down a busy street while vacationing in Washington DC, it's windy, and I want to distract my kids from the chilly weather. My husband and I joke about 'droppi...

CONVERSATION WITH MY SON- ON SEXTING

September 2, 2014

It has been on my mind to bring up the subject of sexting with my ready-to-start middle school son. At 11, if he's old enough to get his own cell phone, I reckon he is old enough to have his first conversation on sexting with his mom. So said I to my daughter who thought its too soon to "torture the poor guy" with "your conversations". I beg to differ. Ready or not, here I come. I wait for the right moment for the first discussion on the subject. Of course, there'll be many more. Many many m...

Conversation With My Daughter- On Sexting

June 29, 2014
As my 15 year old daughter drives herself to her band camp with me at the passenger seat, I pick up on a conversation we had couple of years back. "Remember the story of that beautiful Cincinnati teen, Jesse Logan, who had committed suicide after a nude photo that was meant for her boyfriend's eyes alone ended up being circulated around her high school?". She did remember our discussion. The incident had occurred in 2008, sending a shiver down the spine of every parent. I told her, sadly, inc...

Conversation With My Son- It's A Woman's Prerogative To Change Her Mind

April 16, 2014

This happened an year or so back, but a recent event triggered the memory of that conversation with my son. I clearly play out that day in my mind-

My son and daughter are arguing- "You said you'll play basketball with me", he goes. "Well, I can't anymore. I have lot of homework", she goes, I watch this scenario, too tired to intervene and half hoping the issue will resolve by itself as it sometimes does when they somehow manage to arrive at an agreement that is half-pleasing to both. It soon ...
