Conversation With My Kids - On Friendship

Posted by Sonal Kulshrestha on Sunday, November 23, 2014, In : Conversation with my kids
As parents of our kids, we want to impart illimitable wisdom to our children. As children of our parents, we know that we might not get a very receptive audience, but somewhere something will stay. And so the interminable conversations continue- even in the face of disinterested looks. Or do we detect some fleeting interest?

As we stroll down a busy street while vacationing in Washington DC, it's windy, and I want to distract my kids from the chilly weather. My husband and I joke about 'droppi...

Conversation With My Daughter- On Sexting

Posted by Sonal Kulshrestha on Sunday, June 29, 2014, In : Conversation With My Daughter
As my 15 year old daughter drives herself to her band camp with me at the passenger seat, I pick up on a conversation we had couple of years back. "Remember the story of that beautiful Cincinnati teen, Jesse Logan, who had committed suicide after a nude photo that was meant for her boyfriend's eyes alone ended up being circulated around her high school?". She did remember our discussion. The incident had occurred in 2008, sending a shiver down the spine of every parent. I told her, sadly, inc...

Conversation With My Son- It's A Woman's Prerogative To Change Her Mind

Posted by Sonal Kulshrestha on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, In : Conversation with my son

This happened an year or so back, but a recent event triggered the memory of that conversation with my son. I clearly play out that day in my mind-

My son and daughter are arguing- "You said you'll play basketball with me", he goes. "Well, I can't anymore. I have lot of homework", she goes, I watch this scenario, too tired to intervene and half hoping the issue will resolve by itself as it sometimes does when they somehow manage to arrive at an agreement that is half-pleasing to both. It soon ...

Conversation With My Daughter- Social Media

Posted by Sonal Kulshrestha on Friday, January 17, 2014, In : Conversation With My Daughter
The ten minutes ride to school is one of the best time I get to have a good conversation with my daughter. I look forward to this. So much so that I feel cheated out of it if my husband insists on dropping her on route to an appointment at times. It's MY time with MY darling (she's his too, I know). Not that I make a big deal of it- for that'll scare her off, no doubt :)

Anyway, although I would love to talk back of the numerous rides and talks we've had, I won't, for that too will scare her o...

My Son, A Techie at Ten, Sets Up A Fund-Raising Campaign For UNICEF...

Posted by Sonal Kulshrestha on Friday, December 13, 2013, In : My Son, A Techie
Like I said, my son, now ten year old, is the force behind desideewar- as far as technology goes. I've already talked about how he set up the website for desideewar and how he generated the QR code for it (when we didn't even realize he even knows what that is) on my previous blogs. This Christmas season, he once again showed his "alertness" to technological resources available out there and his enthusiasm to use them.

So my daughter runs the 'For A Cause. Together' segment on desideewar. It's...

Conversations With My Son...

Posted by Sonal Kulshrestha on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, In : Conversation with my son

Last year, December of 2012, a young girl in India was brutally attacked and assaulted by a group of six men in a bus, the youngest of the brute was just 17 year old. The 24 year old brave heart succumbed to her injuries within a fortnight. The incident jolted thousands of people to take to streets to protest and for the first time the issue of lack of safety for women and the numerous cases of groping/ staring/ leching  and assaults on the streets of India was being discussed openly and glob...

My kids get involved

Posted by Sonal Kulshrestha on Saturday, May 11, 2013, In : How desideewar started
When we started last year, my daughter, Raashi was 13 years old and son, Rohun, 9. Raashi was the one who suggested that we name the page ‘desideewar’, all lower case and one word. She quickly comes up with the cover picture for the desideewar page. Rohun takes care of the profile picture. He asks me for all my colorful dupattas. “Mommy, can I have all of your colorful ‘thingys’ that you wear around your neck“, he says. He places them all in a decorative wall piece that we have in...
