CANNES 2015

The 68th annual Cannes Film Festival was held from 13 to 24 May 2015.

Five Things To Know About Cannes 2015 From A Desi Perspective:

#1. The Palme d'Or ( the Golden Palm, the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival) was awarded to the French film Dheepan directed by Jacques Audiard. The movie is about a former soldier, a young woman and a little girl who pose as a family to escape the civil war in Sri Lanka.

#2. In the 'Un Certain Regard' category, Masaan (Englisg title- Fly Away Solo), directed by Neeraj Ghaywan from India, won the Promising Future Prize along with Nahid directed by Ida Panahandeh from Iran. While Masaan is set in Varanasi and tackles the issues of caste and traditions in the city, Nahid is about a young divorcee living with her son in a small northern city of Iran who wants to marry the man she has fallen in love with. Another Indian film, The Forth Direction, directed by

Gurvinder Singh, was also premiered at the festival in the Un Certain Regard category. It is a Punjabi film based on short stories by Waryam Singh Sandhu.

#3Standing Tall, directed by Emmanuelle Bercot, was the festival's opening film. This was the second opening film in the festival's history to have been directed by a woman, after A Man in Love by Diane Kurys which opened the 1987 Cannes Film FestivalStanding Tall was selected for the way it responds to the Charlie Hebdo shootings.

#4Ice and the Sky, directed by Luc Jacquet (of March of the Penguins fame), was the festival's closing film.  Ice and the Sky was selected because it addresses the concern for the future of the planet.

#5. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor and Katrina Kaif were the desi stars at Cannes. Katrina is the 4th Indian Ambassador for L'Oreal Paris in India since January of 2014 following in the footsteps of Aish, Sonam and Freido Pinto who also represent the brand. Aishwarya is the L'Oreal Paris global ambassador and has been a part of the brand for 12 years.

Eva Longoria, who is herself an ambassador of the brand obliviously reciprocates the feeling, for she too tweeted-

Wouldn't be my 10yr anniversary without Aishwayra! @lorealparis #10yrAnniversary #Cannes2015 #BecauseWeCannes

 (Above): Love it!

Top Left: Love the confidence with which Aish is sporting the shirt and wide-pants look.

Top Right: Perfect!

(Left) Nah! Did not like Aishwarya's red carpet dress by designer Elie Saab. Did you? We do love the lovely smile she is sharing with her daughter, Aradhya though.

(Below): Nope! Don't like it!

Did not like Sonam's red carpet look at all. Did you? Jane Fonda's gown in a similar color is much more elegant and stylish. Our much younger desi starlet seems to have made a mistake with this one.

(Below): Nope! Don't like it!  Again, what seems to work with Sonam is this-when in doubt, keep it simple.

This is easy. Love it! Love it! Love it!- all three. Katrina did very well, considering this was her debut appearance at Cannes. But then, it is hardly surprising. She is a natural- in all that she dons.
