Movie Review: Dedh Ishqiya

So saw 'Dedh Ishqiya'. And got to say, this Abhishek Chaubey (yes, the original Ishqiya, his directorial debut, was directed by him also) directed is a unique and a well put together movie. The movie, that is a sequel to 'Ishqiya' of 2004, retains Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi duo and brings on Madhuri Dixit and Huma Qureshi. Vishal Bharadwaj and Raman maroo are the producers.

What's good?

1. First and foremost, the cast of the movie is par excellence. While Begum Para's role seemed to be tailor made for Madhuri Dixit (complete with kathak), Naseeruddin Shah makes every role seem like it was tailor made for him. Arshad Warsi is as good as always and the young 27 year old, Huma Qureshi, who seems as seasoned as her senior cast members, proves yet again that she's here to stay (you'll know her from her debut movies in 2012, Gangs of Wasseypur series, part 1 and 2, and also in others like 'Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana', D-Day, etc.).

2. Lucknow. Lucknow. Lucknow. The movie beautifully captures the essence of the 'nawabi' traditions of Lucknow. You've to just sit back and soak it all in. The 'nasakat' (delicate) of the language, the 'shayari' (poetic lyrics), the outfits, the 'haveli'- everything! The movie showcases the grandeur of the 'nawabi' traditions without making the sets opulent and while still keeping it real. The huge 'haveli' (mansion) is dilapidated, but you can imagine it in its heyday. The glory days of the Nawab might be on the decline, but the attempt at clinging on to the traditions is conveyed subtly and realistically. My favorite was Muniya (Huma) announcing the arrival of the begum (Madhuri) in a true Lucknow fashion- beautiful!

3. The camaraderie between Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi is the perfect example of a perfect older man- younger man chemistry. Vishal Bharadwai tried and almost got it in 'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola' with Pankaj Kapoor and Imran Khan. With this movie, I would say Bollywood gets it. However, my all time favorite older man- younger man camaraderie is as seen between Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling in 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' (2011)- a must watch for all Hindi Film industry directors and producers, if they want to even venture in that space where older and younger men bond.

4. That said, we have to talk about the chemistry between the two leading ladies in the movie too. This again is between an older woman (Madhuri, 46) and a younger woman (Huma, 27), though not in the same way as the men. Theirs is more subtle and portrayed with lot of sensitivity. The two gorgeous gals have done beautifully well too. Can't say anymore than that (you'll know why when you watch it).

5. Of course, the couple chemistry is fascinating too. The scenes between Madhuri and Naseeruddin are visually beautiful- her good looks and his nawab-avatar (read kurta, shawls and language)- are both eye catching and pleasing to the ears. Whereas Arshad and Huma are complete contrast, but no less interesting.

6. The movie is unique. It's about finding your soul mate. Like my friend said, doesn't matter who you find it in. I think I've already said too much. The movie conveys that subtly and craftily.

So what's  Not-So-Good?

1. Well, it does tend to be a little 'drag-y' at times.

2. It's been promoted as a comedy thriller, but could have done with better humor than a constant reference to 'little thing' (at least that's what the caption translated that word to). It's certainly a (non-) rated R movie, so they could have gotten away with some good adult humor, but don't see that and it loses large chunk of points there.

Overall, if you decide to watch it in theater, girls, go with your girlfriends. Or else, wait for Netflix/ DVD (original ONLY please), and watch with your mate. Never with kids, but you already know that.
