Use sunscreen- it’s an easy thing to do for staying healthy

(by Sonal Kulshrestha)

Since the last couple of years I have developed a love for walking. Walking long distances that take long hours as I train for participating in Half- Marathons. Again walking it versus running. Of course, walking 13.1 miles entails about 3 and halfhours of being out in the sun. And training for it definitely takes anywhere from 3 to 4 hours of being out each week. Now, I take the regular precautions like keeping myself hydrated, wearing good running shoes, taking nutritional products with carbohydrates and muscle recovery products. But one thing that I was negligent about was using sunscreen. Big mistake. Because of that negligence I recently got a big scare.

There was this mole on my leg that appeared to have changed color and size. A visit to the dermatologist involved ‘cookie-cutting’ the mole out for biopsy. Then started the two week wait for the biopsy results to be back. And man, was I scared.  I thought of all the times that I had walked long hours with no sunscreen on. I promised God that I’ll never ever do that again. After a long 2 weeks wait, the biopsy result did come back negative, to my relief, but I had certainly learnt an important lesson.

Applying sunscreen lotion on your skin is the best thing you can do for yourself and your kids for an increased chance at long and healthy life.

According to Skin Cancer Foundation, daily application of an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 16 sunscreen to the head, neck, arms, and hand can drastically reduce the risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.  Also, just one blistering sunburn in childhood more than doubles a person's chances of developing melanoma later in life. Simply put, do three simple things to avoid that-

1.      Apply suscreen 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours or after swimming or excessive sweating.

2.       Keep your infants, 0 to 6 months of age, out of sun. Their skin is too sensitive for sunscreen.

3.       Take walks before 10 am or after 4 pm.

Do you think that Indians can’t get skin cancer? While it is true that Caucasians are the primary victims of skin cancer, anyone can develop skin cancer- yes, even people with dark skins. In fact, because skin cancer is not immediately suspected in dark skinned people, it is often diagnosed late and hence proves fatal. The legendry singer, Bob Marley had died of melanoma at 36 because it was diagnosed late. (Source)

So yes, use sunscreen. It’s an easy thing to do for staying healthy.

GREEN TEA
(by Sonal Kulshrestha)

So a friend and I decided to lose a few pounds together. And as we texted each other the status today, she said she's having a hot cup of green tea after a rather heavy lunch with co-workers. When I asked if that helped, she said that every time she has it, it does make her feel a little hungry so seems like it does work to burn fat and increase metobolism. Now, I have heard it often, but today something clicked! That's the power of having a buddy to do things with! I instantly tried it and feeling good about it since. So that was it! We had to share to remind our readers of this wonderful thing that is Green Tea!

So what does Green Tea do? Well, a lot apparently-
1. It is used to treat multiple sclerosis.
2. It is used for treatment and prevention of cancer.
3. It is used to stop Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
4. It is used to raise the metabolism and increase fat oxidation.
5. It reduces the risk of heart diseases and heart attacks by reducing the risk of trombosis.
6. It reduces the risk of esophageal cancer.
7. Drinking green tea inhibits the growth of certain cancer cells, reduces the level of cholesterol in blood, improves the ratio of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol.
8. It is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular diseases
9. It is used to treat impaired immune function. .
10. Some researches show that, drinking green tea regularly may help prevent tooth decay by killing the bacteria which causes the dental plaque.

Fyi, there are flavored versions of Green Tea available too, like berry, pomegranate, etc available everywhere and not just from Lipton.

So don't just sit there,
Find a friend to pair,
Get up, see,
Pick a cup, of Green tea!

(We'll resort to silly rhymes, if that makes you find the time!)

(From a Jay Leno joke. Way back, while talking of the OJ Simpson case and of his lawyer's famous defense line, 'If it doesn't fit (the glove), you must acquit', Jay Leno joked, "We do rhymes, so you don't have to do time.")
