What's happening?

When it comes to government officials, every Indian who lives or has every lived in India has had the experience of having to make multiple visits to a government office on account of the unavailability of the official. Well, now a website has been launched to track the attendance of the government official in various government offices with the goal of giving visibility to general public as well as the government with respect to the employee attendance in various government offices.

The Website ..

The website,, provides attendance data in the form of graphs and other visual representations on the dashboard (as seen in the picture above). As per the website, Deity/NIC/NICSI/UIDAI are the implementing agency for this project and the bio-metric attendance system will need to be made operational in every ministry/department as soon as attendance terminals are delivered which is expected soon.

The NIC and it's role ..

NIC (National Informatics Center) is the premier science and technology organisation of India's Union Government in informatics services and information and communication technology applications. NIC HODs of the bhawan/ department/ministry or its attached/ subordinate office in consultation with nodal officer of that office will identify locations where attendance terminals are to be installed in the Bhawans.

The system ..

The website uses Biometric Attendance System (BAS) that uses a Finger Print Devices. Once the device is activated, attendance can be marked from that device. Once an organization registers with the BAS, the employees register by submitting their details and the 'Aadhaar number'. The system allows employees to mark their attendance on any BAS terminal installed in any Government Building. The dashboard reports would show the location/building from where an employees have marked their attendance.

What is Aadhaar Number, you ask?

  1. As per the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Aadhaar is a 12 digit individual identification number issued by the UIDAI on behalf of the Government of India. This number will serve as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in India.

We say ..

Way to go India! Of course, it will be a while before every ministry/ departments and its attached/ subordinate offices comes on board this system- there will be ample resistance for sure ( bet the bureaucrats are scrambling to somehow stop at this very moment).  But if and when this can be fully implemented, this will surely pave the way for the officials to be available. Next what we'll need is a system to get them to actually work while present. Another site that displays a dashboard of tasks covered each day perhaps?
