SONG Words

In Salena Gomez

HIT SINGLE

Jan 2014

Talking of Hindi words  in songs by American artists, in April of 2013, Salena Gomez, American singer and actress, released her first debut solo album, Stars Dance, that featured the lead single 'Come & Get It'. The song was talked about not only for introducing the grown-up avatar of the former Disney star of 'Wizards of Waverly Place' fame, but also for the clear Indian inspirations involved. The song starts with Hindi lyrics sung in a male voice, there are table based bhangra  beats and the underlying theme is Bollywood inspired. The music video that was released in may of 2013 showcased the  Indian influences with respect to Salena's  outfits and dance routines as well. When Gomez performed the dance at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, she was even seen sporting an elaborate bindi along with the Bollywood inspired clothing.

The single went on to gain the top 10 place in the US Billboard Hot 100, making it Gomez's first single to attain the honor and hence her most successful single to date.

We say,  when a young starlet of today chooses to present herself as a matured woman in a Bollywood inspired theme, it certainly helps our young generation born and raised outside of India to realize how much mainstream our culture is fast becoming. It is a matter of pride to be associated with a culture so ancient and yet so thriving, growing and adapting.
