Indian Born hinduja Brothers in world's super richest list

All the leading dailies of the world covered The Sunday Times Super-Rich List, published on May 11th. It reveals that London is home to 72 of the 104 billionaires in Britain, the largest in the world. Moscow in Russia takes second place with 48 people whose net worth is 1 billion pounds or more. American cities then find a place with New York coming in 3rd, San Francisco forth and Los Angeles fifth. In sixth place is Hong Kong.

That is all very interesting but what caught our attention is the fact that the Indian- born brothers, Sri and Gopi Hinduja top the British list with a fortune of 11.9 billion pounds (S$25 billion).

According to Forbes magazine, London-based brothers Srichand and Gopichand Hinduja co-chair the Hinduja Group, a multinational conglomerate with a presence in 37 countries and businesses as diverse as trucks and lubricants to banking and healthcare. Younger sibling Prakash, along with his son Ajay, look after the banking interests from Geneva. In India, where youngest sibling Ashok lives, they are best known for Bombay Stock Exchange-listed IndusInd Bank and truckmaker Ashok Leyland that is overseen by Gopichand's son Dheeraj. As per the same source, the brothers sold a 49% stake in Saudi-based lubricants maker Petromin for over $300 million last year. Family's showpiece asset is the 67,000 sq. foot Carlton House Terrace, a heritage mansion in London, which sits on the site of a former palace near Buckingham Palace; it is now valued at an estimated $500 million. According to Panorama, the Hindujas’ palatial residence consists of four adjoining Regency houses on the John Nash-designed terrace, bought in 2006 for £66.5m, then restored in a £40m makeover to provide a home for the family, which includes two further brothers – Prakash, who works in Geneva, and Ashok from Mumbai – and more than 30 other relatives.

According to the Eastern Eye story, SP (Srichand) , at 76, is the head of the family. Among the premier Indian business families, none seems as united as the Hindujas. In the century or so since his father, Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja, established the family business, starting in Iran and then spreading all over India, the Hindujas have lived through the ups and downs of global trading.

The women in the family play a part in the family business and charitable activities as well. SP's daughters, Shanu has taken charge of the many charitable activities run by the Hinduja Foundation, while Vinoo looks after healthcare and the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai.

We say, if a family can stay united through thick and thin, in sickness and in joy, then more power to them! Hard work pays- here's to success!
