A Legend Is No More- Manna Dey

Manna Dey passes away at 94 in a Banglore hospital where he was admitted for renal and respiratory problems.

Manna Dey (1919-2013) was a legend and needs no introduction. His versatility and creativity was amply reflected in the numerous Indian movie songs that he sang in his six decade long carreer. Here we compile five interesting facts about him-

#1. Manna Dey's real name was Prabodh Chandra Dey.


#2. He won several awards for his contribution to music, including state honours like the Padma Shri in 1971, the Padma Vibhushan in 2005 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007.


#3. Along with Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh, and Kishore Kumar, he made up what was known as the "famous quartet of singers" who dominated the Hindi film music industry from 1950s to 1970s.


#4. He sang more than 3500 songs in his lifetime.


#5. He did his musical apprenticeship under his uncle and the renowned 'blind singer' Krishna Chandra Dey and chose music as a career due to the influence of his uncle and Sachin Dev Burman, under whom he worked as an assistant.
