MOVIE REVIEW ...

WHAT'S GOOD ...

1. The cast is perfect. Ranbir Kapoor once again proves that he gets what acting his. He has completely aced the role of Ved in the movie. You love him in the first half and understand him in the second for after seeing the second half, in your mind, you re-visit and re-analyze his character.

Deepika Padukone too does justice to every role that she ever plays, this one being no exception. She always, in every shot, comes across as a beauty with brains. She looks stunning, but you never think its about the looks. She has a gorgeous body, but you know its not about the physical form. All that said, she has played similar roles before (thinking of Bachana Ae Haseen,2008; Love Aaj Kal, 2009; Break Ke Baad, 2010; Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, 2013; etc.), but then we can hardly blame the producers for wanting her.

Ranbir-Deeepika chemistry wins yet again.

2. The locations are mesmerizing. Corsica is exotic, but the hilly terrains of Shimla, the cafe in Delhi, the streets of India in general, are just as stare-worthy (I know, I'm a sucker for such scenes).

3. The plot is uniquely presented. The general theme has been done before, more than once even, but never before has the point been conveyed in such a hard-hitting and yet in some ways subtle manner, not to mention distinctive, extraordinary, unrivaled.

4. Music by A.R. Rahman is charming. Especially "Agar Tum Saath Ho" by Alka Yagnik, Arijit Singh.

WHAT'S NOT ...

1.Entertainment vs Depth. The first half is undoubtedly entertaining, with aesthetically beautiful people, clothes and locations, just the right amount of humor and romance. The second half gets dark- lighting wise. It gets somber, sober, even boring, though highbrow, deep and profound. Just wondering if Imtiaz could have found a better balance in the second half ...

Overall ...

Once in a while a movie comes along in which the writer brings forth a common story line but presents it a manner that jolts people on both sides of an issue to think, to re-think, to discuss/ decide/ pledge to make a difference- for the sake of those they love. Tamasha is that movie. Imtiaz Ali is that writer, that director. We have seen many movies that tackle the issue of parents' expectations from their child with respect to grades and career (thinking of 3 Idiots, Dil Dhadakne Do), but this one enlightens you. It drives home the importance of

1. staying attuned to your child's likes and dislikes, listening to what your child says and understanding that he/she doesn't and

2. instilling in your child the confidence of conveying their own thoughts, beliefs and ideas to the parents and knowing that they will be well received by them.

As for the intermittent boring parts in the second half, I prefer to see it as an artist's visualization- it may be boring, but never without depth.

This is a must-watch movie with your 13+ year- old kids (younger ones might give it low rating:))
