Teacher's Day

Do You Know Why?

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s (1888- 1975, picture above) birth anniversary is celebrated as Teacher's Day in India.

Who was he?

Dr. Radhakrishnan served as the President of India from 1962 to 1967. But before that he was revered as a teacher. He was the Professor of Philosophy at Presidency College, Chennai. He also served as the Vice Chancellor of the Andhra University and later Banaras Hindu University. He was named as the Spalding Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics at the University of Oxford.

How Is It celebrated?

On this day, we remember and celebrate the role of our teachers in shaping us into what we are today. In this age of social networking, we take to the social platforms to wish our teachers a very Teacher's Day. For those in school, it's a very special day, both for the teachers as well as the students. As the teachers enjoy a 'free day' being pampered with good meals and gifts, the senior students often take on the role of 'teachers', even decking up in saris, while they go from one classroom to another taking on the teachers' schedule. For those of us who have enjoyed the special day at schools in India have very fond memories of observing Teacher's Day.

Do Other Countries Celebrate Teacher's Day?

Many countries have a designated day or week to honor teachers. In the United States, the first full week of May is designated to honoring teachers, the Tuesday of that week being the National Teacher Day according to the National Education Association. As for other 'desi land', Pakistan honors the teachers on Oct 5th, Bangladesh celebrates Teacher's Day on Oct 4th, Bhutan on May 2nd, while Nepal celebrates 'Guru Purnima' on the full moon day of the Nepali month Ashad sometime in mid-July.

Let's remember to thank our favorite teachers who make a difference in our lives, our parents who never fail to guide us, our older siblings who say it as it is, our spouses who continue to the force that change us (hopefully for the better :-)) and our kids-for when we are placed in a role of a teacher, the easy students make us look good, but the hard students make us a better teacher- we either learn to teach the best way possible, or learn how  not to teach! Our kids have been both at different times....
